President Thomas S. Monson was called and set apart today as the new President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  His calling as the new President is not surprising in the least.  He will be an incredible leader and ambassador for the Church.  He is a man known for his great speeches that include many stories of personal experience to illustrate his points.  He has one of the most remarkable memories of any man I have ever had the opportunity to listen to.  Many of us often joke that he only has four scriptures memorized, the Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants.

Even more of a blessing, is that he has been given the keys to act in authority over the Church and to serve as its and the world’s Prophet, Seer, and Revelator.   While we members of the Church sustain all of the Apostles of the Church as Prophet, Seers, and Revelators,  only the President of the Church is given the keys to operate its head.

The biggest surprise was the calling of Elder Dieter Uchtdorf as the 2nd Counselor in the First Presidency.  Of the 14 current members of the Quorum of the 12, Elder Uchtdorf was 13th in seniority and was only called to the Quorum in the past 3 years.  He is also the only member of the quorum who was born and lived most of his life outside the United States (he is from Germany).  The calling of him was certainly one of wisdom and revelation, as it represents the increasingly globalizing nature of the Church and the hope is that it will help the Church continue to reach out to people across the world.

Undoubtedly the Church is in good hands and will continue to be led by the hand of God.  May God bless President Monson, President Eyring, and President Uchtdorf.

  1. I think Elder Uchtdorf was actually the 12th in seniority, not the 13th, since both Bednar and Cook are less senior. Even though Bednar and Uchtdorf were called at the same time, Uchtdorf is listed as the more senior apostle.

  2. They were called at the same time the senior is the set apart first…

I had a feeling the second counsellor was going to be a junior member, even told a friend last night that it was going to be someone who knew the globe.

  3. Love that Uchdorf’s calling opens up the First Presidency! In recent years the 70 are becoming much more diverse and it’s exciting to see the First Presidency becoming so also.

You know, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if a hispanic were called to the Quorum of the Twelve in April at G.C. I think that would be great for the Church.
